Sustainable agriculture

800 million people remain undernourished, and one in nine goes to bed hungry. In developing countries, almost 80% of food is produced by smallholders struggling to adapt to climate change. Most agricultural innovation focusses on quick impacts, new varieties and genetic modifications, which are unaffordable for smallholder farmers. We need approaches that combine traditional methods with advances in technology and science.

Our expertise in this field includes:

  • Agriculture for resilience

Our work in sustainable agriculture focuses on working with small holder farmers to improve their resilience to climate change. This includes support for agricultural extension mechanisms through the use of locally appropriate climate-resilient crops and improved weather forecasting.

  • Agriculture for livelihoods

We focus on making agricultural market systems work for the poor by using measures to increase linkages to markets systems, and inspire new forms of private sector investment in agri-businesses. We support the design, piloting, financing and scaling of inclusive agribusiness models; proving the business case for investing in agriculture and agribusiness, including energy for productive use. Our goal is to have inclusive and sustainable agricultural markets that increase incomes and create jobs.

Our flagship sustainable agriculture project

From Vulnerability to Resilience
