Faecal sludge management in Bangladesh

While rapidly-growing towns across Bangladesh don’t have proper sewerage system, the country has made a remarkable progress in terms of sanitation.

Practical Action has been in the forefront of the faecal sludge management (FSM) practices in Bangladesh.

National workshop on faecal sludge management (FSM) business model in Bangladesh

19 June: Practical Action, in partnership with ITN-BUET and Faridpur Municipality, organised a national workshop to review and discuss different business models of faecal sludge management being promoted by different agencies in Bangladesh. Practical Action along with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, BRAC and three other local organisations (DWASA, DSK, MATI Organics Limited) presented their models in running emptying, transportation and treatment businesses.

The business plan prepared by Practical Action for Faridpur City was appreciated by the participants because of its city-scale, whole service and value chain. The Chief of WASH wing and Director of WASH policy support (and Additional Secretary of Bangladesh Government) also appreciated the WASH related technical works of Practical Action in Bangladesh. He also acknowledged our contribution and support to the ongoing development of FSM Institutional and Regulatory Framework.

Consultation workshops for FSM institutional and regulatory framework in Bangladesh

Practical Action is conducting field facilitation to address issues and priorities of faecal sludge management (FSM) of secondary towns along with other agencies and NGOs in Bangladesh under the umbrella coordination of ITN-BUET. The field facilitation is designed to get feedbacks and priorities of grassroots level and WASH sectoral stakeholders on FSM institutional and regulatory framework.  We are facilitating consultation with local stakeholders in three municipalities – Faridpur, Satkhira and Gaibandha, and Rangpur City Corporation. The focused group discussion and key informant interviews were conducted at Faridpur and Satkhira municipalities on 8 and 9 June.

Likewise, we successfully conducted field level consultation workshops with the mayor, councilors, staff of Satkhira Municipality, customers, sweepers, Department of Agriculture and Public Health and Engineering of Satkhira on 8 and 9 June 2016.

Practical Action is a member of national level FSM working committee of 32 organisations including government and non-government organisations, research and academia.  The important feedback and suggestions received during the discussions at different level would be helpful for the working committee to develop the institutional and regulatory framework for faecal sludge management in Bangladesh.
