Himalaya micro-hydro scheme officially commissioned

8 April 2015

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Dr Samuel Undenge, officially commissioned the Himalaya Micro Hydro Scheme on Wednesday 8 April 2015.

The commissioning of the 80kW micro hydro scheme was a key milestone in the EU-funded Rural Sustainable Energy Development in Zimbabwe (RuSED) project.

This four-year project ends in July 2015 and has the objective of increasing affordable and sustainable renewable energy services for the rural population in Zimbabwe. The project is managed by Practical Action in partnership with Oxfam, who are the consortium lead with responsibility for the second project site (a solar energy / irrigation / agro-processing scheme in Gutu, Mashonaland South whose commissioning took place on 10 April 2015). Beneficiaries in Himalaya include 300 households, two schools, 20 small entrepreneurs and an agribusiness centre.

The purpose of the event was to officially launch and handover responsibility for the maintenance and running of the micro-hydro scheme to the community; a learning opportunity for various stakeholders to see micro hydro technology, how it is managed by the community for various end uses.
